“When others talk about quality, they see it as the life of a company, while at Yuwell, we view it as the life of the people who use our products.”—Guangming Wu, Chairman, Yuwell Medical Equipment Inc. The company name “Yuyue” refers to a jumping fish, conveying a vivid image of vigorous growth. In April 2008, Yuwell went public in Shenzhen — it had taken only ten years for Yuyue to transform from a Township & Village Enterprise (TVE) into a well-known, publically listed company. Today, it has become the leader in the Chinese medical equipment market and a world champion in the sale of oxygen generators. This case investigates Yuyue’s core competencies, strategies to generate capital and the institutional context, all of which contributed to its success and transformation from a small TVE into a renowned public company.

Abstract

2013: five years since Yuwell went public in 2008. Over a decade, Yuwell had experienced remarkable expansion, seeing its revenue quadruple and achieving a six-fold increase in net profits. Yuwell has filed almost 100 product patents to date, and its systematic innovations streamlined 273 complicated manufacturing processes into just 69 simplified processes, which facilitated the creation of the fastest production line in the world for making desktop sphygmomanometers. Using this production line, it now takes Yuwell only 3.3 seconds to produce a sphygmomanometer. And by relying a combination of manual labor and automation, Yuwell developed the world’s longest production line for live line testing of oxygen generators. This case mainly focuses on the following questions: How were these innovations developed? What were the characteristics of the strategy for promoting innovation at Yuwell? And what would be the possible roles of innovation in the future development of the company?

一直以来，医疗器械行业面临着三大现状：政府法规约束严格，评估体系却过于宽容，质量监管相对落后。有限的资源以及知识产权问题已经成为行业发展的两大拦路虎。本案例所引用的鱼跃公司，从一家家族乡镇企业，几经扩张，如今成为本土企业中市值排行第三的上市公司，仅次于威高和迈瑞，并且依旧保持着强劲的增长势头和盈利能力。案例详细展现了鱼跃公司在商业模式、产品设计与技术上的创新举措，以及在此背后的企业创新驱动力的构建方式。对于一个以创新为核心竞争力的发展型企业而言，如何让创新价值在渠道开拓中得到体现，如何为创新的可持续性提供科学的管理制度和人才储备，如何保护企业的创新权益，这是选择公司战略时需要深思的问题。

Abstract

Purpose – Multinational companies are increasingly locating R&D activities in emerging markets, particularly China. This paper aims to focus on why China is moving from imitation to innovation, how MNCs are evolving their R&D activities in China, the challenges they face, and how they deal with these challenges. Design/methodology/approach – As this is a viewpoint paper, the authors do not report any methodology other than the general research that the authors have been conducting for the last two years, primarily interviews with companies. Findings – The key finding is that China is moving from imitation to innovation and that multinational companies should develop strategies for conducting R&D there. Originality/value – This is a fairly original paper in that there has been only limited research on innovation in China.
